The Process:
1. Initial Visit Outline of the project to the students and brainstorm re: Story - General outline of the story should be coming together by the end of this session. Students carry on working on it to achieve outline script.
2. Outline Script approval and Casting: Approval of, and changes to, the outline script. Casting of all the lead characters. Script writing commences. Prop lists, Costume requirements and locations are now arranged by the group. Teachers carry on working with the students in preparation for the shoot prep session. Storyboards commence with the teacher, storyboard students and director.
3. Shoot Prep Session: This is the first time the students get their hands on the equipment. Cameras, tripods and sound are allocated to teams (2 students to each camera and 2 to sound). Characters get their first chance to block out a scene and play it through. Shot logs are explained and job allocated. Clapper allocated.
4. The Shoot Day Arrives: The shoot day is hectic! Run by Fineline Productions as a professional shoot, students will be guided in the routines required to achieve a professional result. As the day progresses, the shoot invariable gets “smoother” as the team gels and the routines become second nature. The shots get better and the time taken for each one decreases!
5. The Edit: Fineline Productions will supply a digital non-linear Edit Suite to the School/Group for a number of days. In conjunction with a small core group (including the Director, Storyboarders and other interested students) the edit will be started by a member of the Fineline Staff. As the edit goes on, students will have a chance to have a go themselves and will have at least 1 day of unaccompanied editing (ie: Students taking the full responsibility for the cutting scenes together!) Soundtracks will also be added by the students and balanced.
6. Final Touches: Once all of the rough footage has been cut together, your editor will come back in for a day and tidy up! At this stage all of the edit will be critically evaluated, visual effects added where required, sound will be balanced throughout, transitions added, titles added to the front end and the rolling credits added to the end of the film.
7. Copies and evaluation: All of the students involved in the project will receive a copy of the final film on DVD or VHS. The school will also receive a copy. A full evaluation (both oral and written) will be done and the results sent back to the school in the form of a written report. Individual students can be graded on any number of criteria if the project is to be used for IT attainment or other curricular based use.
